<image:title>Travel - Harberton / Harbertonford Circuit (3.5 - 4.5 miles) - Harberton to Harbertonford</image:title>
<image:caption>1. We start near the middle of the village, close to Preston Farm and the bus shelter. Opposite no.4 Wesley Place is an ancient Green Lane heading south, signposted ‘Unmetalled Road’. Head up this track and immediately you are in another world. About 150m up the track follow the obvious left fork downhill which starts to run parallel to the Englebourne stream below. After another 250m, or so look out on the left for the fallen oak with its interesting fungi and occasional philosophical graffiti. From here there are lovely hedgerow views over what might be called Englebourne Vale. Carry on gently up and then down to Key's Englebourne.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Harberton / Harbertonford Circuit (3.5 - 4.5 miles) - Harbertonford to Harberton</image:title>
<image:caption>4. At the small village green, landscaped in 2003 after the floods, opposite the Post Office & Shop (beneath which the Englebourne stream emerges to join the River Harbourne) turn right, cross the A381 and then immediately left by the bus shelter and St Peter's Church where the road sign points to Diptford. The road swings sharply left after Packs Close passing ancient gated entrance pillars on your right. The former Old Woollen Mill buildings are the massive structures on your left.</image:caption>

<image:title>Travel - Clockwise around Harberton (2 miles) - 1. To start this walk head westwards up the hill past the Harberton bus stop with the row of Wesley Place houses on your right. Beyond the speed limit sign and the very high banks to your left, Tristford Farm and its barns are next on your right. Further up is The Manor, originally The Vicarage, with its imposing gates and prominent Edward VII era post box in the wall. Just a little further up on your left, built into the stone boundary wall at ground level are two niches, which some think were originally constructed to hold milk churn stands, along with recesses set in the stonework for possible racks and dairy shelving.</image:title>

<image:title>Travel - Clockwise around Harberton (2 miles) - 2. At Triangle Cross take the right turn, signposted Belsford. About 100 metres further on is an old slate-roofed pig pen on your right and then shortly after, the first glimpse of the Harbourne Valley through a gate on the left. Carry straight on at Mill Cross, with Screw Lane on your right and the lane down to Belsford Corn Mill on your left. If you look back, as the road begins to climb between high hedges on either side, a glimpse of Dundridge can be seen. After a bend where the incline steepens, if you look behind again you can spot the (present day) Vicarage and Bridge Farm buildings aligning. At the barn entrance further up there is a spectacular view down the Harbourne Valley with Leigh Woods hillside looking imposing on the left. A little further up the road, where two sets of gates are close together, there are Dartmoor views to the west including Ugborough Beacon and Three Barrows. Distant Eastern White Barrow is directly ahead as the lane starts to drop down steeply and we see glimpses through the trees of the hamlet of Belsford.</image:title>

<image:title>Travel - Clockwise around Harberton (2 miles) - 3. Where the lane bends sharply left over the stream, turn right onto the beginning of the uphill stony track of Watery Lane. It’s very rocky, seriously uneven and washed away in parts. Stout footwear required and, if your balance isn’t brilliant, a walking pole is handy. Immediately on your left there is a pond fed by springs and behind there are several recently planted belts of trees. The way is stony and loose but after a gentle climb it becomes easier underfoot and, as it levels out, a second pond can be seen, this time on the right. Just before a double kink in the lane, there’s an old oak and three ash trees on your left, after which there’s another big oak on the right. Soon, conditions underfoot deteriorate up another stretch of rocky footpath with more oaks on the right looking splendid on a sunny day. Views open up behind as you climb gradually uphill where there are higher banks either side covered in primroses, stitchwort, violets, campions, bugle, celandine, yellow dead nettle, blackthorn blossom and dandelion during the spring.</image:title>

<image:title>Travel - Clockwise around Harberton (2 miles) - 4. At the very top, when you meet the road, turning right takes you back to Harberton. Wild garlic grows well on the left verge as you walk up and past Tristford reservoir on your right. On top of the hill, near Copperthorn Cross, the views to the east open up across to Marldon and Torquay. Then it’s downhill all the way to Harberton past three view gates, the last one framing the church. After Tristford’s West Lodge, there are tall trees in a narrow strip of woodland bounded by a stone wall, all on your left. Go straight over at Gill’s Cross; the junction with Dark Lane and Screw Lane. Pass the Vicarage on your right and then the Parish Hall leading you back into the village of Harberton.</image:title>

<image:title>Travel - Beenleigh Brook (5 miles) - 2. At the footpath sign on your right descend steeply in woodland to cross the little footbridge over the Harbourne River. A series of large sandstone boulders follows the water’s edge, and there’s a fine big oak tree to admire as you clamber onto the splendid new walkway over the bog. Through the stile into the next field, turn half-left to follow a sheep track, but where it veers off uphill keep straight on heading for the field corner and a five-bar gate under trees. The path then stays closer to the river, passes over an ancient slate stile via a tiny metal gate leading you into a woodland strip and the next field. Hidden behind the trees is the weir at the start of the mill leat which supplied Belsford Corn Mill. A sloping terrace way takes you to the gap at the far end where the last field beckons. Just as Langford Farm comes into view aim half left uphill to a wooden stile under an old oak.</image:title>

<image:title>Travel - Beenleigh Brook (5 miles) - 4. Carry straight on at Eastleigh Cross, passing interesting old barns and farmhouses and the small village green. After half a km, at the fork, keep right on the gravel lane signed Foalesleigh Farm. There is always a wet patch just before the farmhouse as water from a spring runs over the lane. Later as your route gently descends and is softer underfoot you enjoy some of the best views in the parish. More of a track now and, as you descend to a steel gate, veer left to a marked footpath through a wooden five-bar gate. Down to the Beenleigh Brook, Englebourne Wood is visible on the left and Fletcher’s Combe Farm is tucked away to your right. After crossing the footbridge, or fording the water, the right-of-way is straight on to a four-way fingerpost by another small footbridge over a tiny brook.</image:title>

<image:title>Travel - Beenleigh Brook (5 miles) - 7. Soon after reaching a sharp right-hand bend with yet more views you have gained the top of the climb. A modern farm track joins on your left, but you head straight on downhill alongside a small copse on your right. It’s a poorly drained wide track, almost impassable after long periods of rain, and soon wends its way down to Key's Englebourne with a glimpse of Dundridge and then distant views of Harberton village.</image:title>

<image:title>Travel - Painsford and the Washbourne Ridge (7½ miles) - 4. Turn right at Bow Bridge Cross, walk over the bridge, keeping right at the Waterman's Arms. The red postbox in the wall dates back to at least 1885. From here, you're uphill for well over a kilometre, passing the ancient Yeatson farmsteads. After this, it's softer underfoot with the olden way climbing until you reach a sharp right. Here, ignore the footpath down the field to Lower Washbourne and continue gently up bending left onto the ridge. The climb is well worth it once you reach this commanding viewpoint and the impressive row of a dozen or so fine beeches lining one bank of this very old green lane. The local farmer says that once there were many more beeches - no gaps. Looking back from the beginning of the ridge you can just spot the Dart near Stoke Gabriel. Later, sweeping views over the Wash Valley display all the coombes, wooded hedgerows and old pastures that characterise the charm of this tranquil scene. A long gradual slightly overgrown descent takes you past the tiny Beenleigh Cross track junction but carry on down to the metalled road.</image:title>
