Transition Streets in Harbertonford & Harberton
Want to cut household bills and do your bit for nature and climate? Sign up to connect with others in our villages to get support and take action.
Transition Streets is an award-winning project that helps us connect with our neighbours, support each other to reduce our living costs and cut our carbon footprint by taking practical action together.
Groups of 6–8 households meet 7 times over 3-4 months and in the process become better connected and support each other to take practical action individually and collectively to address the cost of living, energy and climate crises. After some initial support from a Transition Streets facilitator at the first session, groups are then self-led. Everyone is given an easy-to-read Transition Streets Handbook and groups are guided through topics including Energy, Resource Use, Transport, Food and Water. Participants can then create their own projects from energy saving projects to befriending, car shares or skills exchanges on anything from wildlife friendly gardening to repairing/upcycling.
The original project in Totnes 2010/11 involved around 500 households which each made average annual savings of £570 on household bills, as well as big reductions in their carbon footprints. It ran very successfully in Harberton and Harbertonford in 2022 - people who participated said they very much enjoyed it, found it helpful and inspiring. We’re now offering it again in 2023.
